How to use it

  1. Find your hook sizeRead across for the tippet range that balances that fly.
  2. Take the finer end for driesA softer connection gives a cleaner drift on the surface.
  3. Take the heavier end for weightWeighted nymphs, indicators and streamers put more load on the knot.

These ranges come from the rule of three, widened by one X in each direction to cover real fishing conditions. Wind, current speed and how heavily the water gets fished all move the answer.

Common questions

Does the same tippet size work for dries and nymphs

Not always. Many anglers drop a size finer on dry flies for a softer presentation and go a size heavier on weighted nymphs and streamers that take more abuse. The matcher gives you a balanced range and you adjust from there.

What happens if my tippet is too heavy for the fly

A stiff heavy tippet on a small fly kills the drift. The fly gets dragged rather than drifting free, and refusals go up. It is the most common reason a good fly stops working.

What happens if my tippet is too light

You lose flies on the cast, you lose fish, and you play fish longer than you should. Long fights are hard on trout you intend to release.
