Sixty-three, and the number moves. The National Park Service manages more than four hundred sites, but only these carry the full national park designation. The rest are monuments, preserves, historic sites, seashores and recreation areas.
Yellowstone was first in 1872, before the Park Service existed to run it. New River Gorge in West Virginia is the most recent, redesignated from a national river in 2020. Several on the list were protected long before they became parks: Hot Springs was a federal reservation from 1832, and Denali spent most of a century as Mount McKinley.
The first ten come easily, because they are the ones near where you already travel. The Utah five, Yellowstone and Grand Teton in one trip, whatever is within a day of home.
Then it slows. Eight of the sixty-three are in Alaska and four of those have no road to them. American Samoa is a five hour flight from Hawaii. Dry Tortugas is a boat or a seaplane from Key West. Anyone finishing this list is doing it deliberately.
Which is the honest argument for ticking them off as you go rather than at the end. The list is a record of where you have been, not a target.
