The difference is not genetic, it is a life history: a steelhead migrates to the ocean, feeds there for two to three years, and returns to fresh water to spawn, while a rainbow trout spends its whole life in fresh water. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game states it plainly: since the two are the same species, there are no major physical differences between them. Are steelhead and rainbow trout the same fish?
Steelhead and rainbow trout are the same species, Oncorhynchus mykiss, separated only by where they spend their adult lives. A steelhead is a rainbow trout that migrates to the ocean and returns to fresh water to spawn. Same scientific name. Same eggs. Same fry sitting in the same gravel.
The split happens later, and it is not a clean genetic line. That is the part most articles get wrong. These are not two fish that look alike. They are one fish living two lives.
Difference 1: Color, and why a fresh steelhead looks like chrome
Color is the first thing that separates a steelhead from a resident rainbow trout, and it comes directly from the ocean. A rainbow trout carries a body that is blue, green, or yellowish, shading to silvery white underneath, with a horizontal pink-red stripe running from the gills to the tail and black spots along the back. That stripe is where the name comes from.
An adult steelhead is silvery or brassy, and that is where its name comes from. Juvenile O. mykiss heading for salt water go through smoltification, a set of physical changes that let them survive in the ocean. During that process, per the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, they lose their parr marks and turn silver.
A fish fresh from salt water is bright chrome. The longer it sits in the river, the more the color returns. A steelhead a few weeks into its run starts showing the same rose stripe as the resident fish holding in the pool below it.
Difference 2: Size, and what two years of ocean feeding does
Size is the most reliable visible difference between steelhead and rainbow trout, and it is a feeding story. Oncorhynchus mykiss reaches lengths up to 45 inches and weights up to 55 pounds, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The National Wildlife Federation notes that a more typical weight is about 8 pounds.
The gap between those numbers is the ocean. A stream-resident rainbow eats insects, crustaceans, fish eggs, and small fish. Once a steelhead smolts and enters open water it feeds on squid, amphipods, and other fish, and grows at a rate no stream can support.
Mature steelhead have generally spent three years in fresh water before migrating, then another two years feeding in the ocean before they return. Five years, most of the growth packed into the last two.
Difference 3: Body shape and proportion
Body shape separates a sea-run fish from a river fish, though it is the least dependable of the five. Steelhead are generally more streamlined. A fish that has covered open ocean is proportioned for it.
Resident rainbow trout are harder to pin down. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game notes that body shape and coloration vary widely among stream residents, reflecting habitat, age, sex, and degree of maturity. A well-fed lake rainbow can be deep-bodied and heavy. A high-gradient creek fish can be lean.
Use shape to confirm what color and size already told you. Do not use it alone.
Difference 4: Spawning condition, kelts, and fin wear
Spawning condition tells you where a steelhead sits in its run, and it has no equivalent in a resident rainbow trout. Steelhead are iteroparous, meaning they can spawn more than once. Pacific salmon are semelparous: they spawn once and die.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports that the percentage of steelhead returning to spawn a second time typically ranges from 20 to 30 percent, and may run as low as 10 percent or as high as 50 percent. Larger, older females survive at a higher rate than smaller and younger ones. Males survive spawning less well than females.
Spent spawners are called kelts. They are ragged and thin on the way back downstream, and their color returns to bright silver as they resume feeding and rebuild fat stores. A kelt in April and a chrome fish in December are the same animal at opposite ends of the same trip.

Difference 5: Where you are standing, and what month it is
Location and season are the most useful tells for separating steelhead from rainbow trout, and neither one requires you to look at the fish. Steelhead spend most of the year in estuaries or open ocean and return to fresh water only to spawn. Resident rainbow trout are in the river year round.
Spawning happens in spring, from late March through early July, as daily water temperatures reach 6 to 9 degrees Celsius, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. If you are standing on coastal water inside a known run window and you land a large chrome fish, you have your answer before you look at the stripe.
Geography narrows it further. Both forms are native to North America west of the Rockies, and the species has been introduced in nearly every other state and on every continent except Antarctica. Sea-run steelhead range the Pacific Rim, from southern California through the Gulf of Alaska to the Kamchatka Peninsula. A rainbow trout in a Pennsylvania limestone creek has no ocean to go to.

Why do some rainbow trout go to sea and others never leave?
Whether an Oncorhynchus mykiss becomes a steelhead or stays a resident rainbow trout is not settled at hatching. Idaho Fish and Game describes the outcome as the result of interactions among a fish's genotype, its condition in terms of size and growth, and its environment. Genetics load the dice. They do not call the roll.
The National Wildlife Federation puts the consequence in one line: offspring of two steelhead can stay in fresh water and live as resident trout, and offspring of two resident rainbow trout can produce a steelhead. A review of anadromy and residency in O. mykiss published in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences reaches the same conclusion: both forms can give rise to the other.
This matters on the water. The resident fish you released last spring may have produced the chrome fish someone lands three years from now. There is no clean line between the two populations to manage separately.
What this means for how you handle these fish
The shared biology of steelhead and rainbow trout has a direct consequence for conservation. Because rainbow trout have been introduced almost everywhere, the species overall is not at risk of extinction, and in some waters where it is not native it is treated as a pest. Native populations are a different story. The National Wildlife Federation notes that some are federally listed as endangered, and that native fish face habitat degradation, dams that block upstream migration, whirling disease, and hybridization with other trout.
So the resident fish in your net is not a lesser version of the sea-run one. It is the same genetic pool, and in a coastal system it may be the parent stock for the next run. That is a reason to keep it wet, keep the fight short, and put it back facing into the current.
